Where in the World - Paris Attacks

The world was stunned with unprecedented attacks on the City of Lights from multiple gunmen and suicide bombers attacking multiple targets in Paris, France.

Attacks

The attacks took place on Friday night with multiple attacks carried out by multiple terrorists. The attackers targeted people sitting outside Paris' famous cafe's and restaurants along with a music concert and a soccer game between France and Germany. Of the 130 that died many were attending a concert in Bataclan. Later it was discovered the attacks had been orchestrated by ISIS with the leader scurrying away.

Response

Internationally there was condemnation from world leaders and pledges of support for France with condolences coming from all corners. After the initial attacks France began a man hunt for the terrorists that escaped along with neighbouring nations. The manhunt resulted in the organizer pinned down in an apartment block who eventually died along with others including a female cousin of his who set off a suicide vest she was wearing.

With such a brazen attack by ISIS France was left no choice but to intensify strikes on ISIS with a declaration of war with other world leaders calling for more action.

Need to Know - Refugees

This week saw still more refugee's fleeing war torn nations in hope of safety with tragedy following them to new shores.

A photo of a dead Syrian boy shocked the world showing him washed ashore after he drowned when the boat he was in capsized with his family attempting to flee war torn Syria. While more refugees flee the burden is being felt across Europe with many refugees trying to reach more prosperous nations further North. Many politicians have seen the refugee crisis as a political rallying point with Britain possibly accepting thousands more from Syria. While many nations struggle to contain the endless wave of refugees many have stepped up to try help with volunteers in Munich Germany offering help and supplies.

Technology Far and Near

This week technology allowed man to travel to the outskirts of our world while closer to home it was fighting for it's freedom.

Far

The ESA made history when the Rosetta spacecraft managed to successfully land it's robot craft, Philae, on the surface of Comet 67P. There was a slight hiccup when the anchoring harpoons didn't fire causing the probe to bounce and re-land technically making it both the first and second successful landing. A little further out in space scientists believe they may have figured out how Jupiter's infamous red spot got it's colour.

On the human front of space exploration, investigations into the crash of Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo has revealed that the surviving pilot didn't realize his copilot unlocked the space plane's re-entry system early. 3 space station crew, one from Russia one from the United States and one from Germany, returned home after 5 and a half months on board the International Space Station landing their Soyuz capsule in Kazakhstan.

And finally when it comes to orbiting our place in the universe Elon Musk confirmed plans for his company SpaceX to launch satellites in 2-3 months to provide internet access but this was over shadowed when the Chinese revealed plans to create a satellite facility in Antarctica raising concerns of the militarisation of continent.

Near

Closer to home the worlds two largest polluters, the US and China, made progress by agreeing on cutting green house gas emissions and also agreeing to drop tariffs on a wide range of technology products.

But soon it was back to the usual debates with President Obama stepping in to give his support to Net Neutrality but while your access might be free for the time being it's also been revealed that US authorities have been snagging large amounts of data via mobile phones using fake cell towers on planes. But it's not only the American Government as we discovered when Germany's foreign intelligence agency reported that it wants to spend $375 million to spy in real time on social networks outside of Germany.

And lastly the FBI was busy after it managed to uncover and arrest the creator of under world website Silk Road 2.0 causing the TOR project member to figure out where they went wrong but while the FBI may have had success on one front they lost out when a judge said the public had the right to know about the FBI's facial recognition database.

Sporting Shockers

Wow, what a week. From World Cup slaughters to court room drama, the sporting world has never been more explosive.

Beyond Shocking

In one of the biggest FIFA World Cup shockers of all time Germany decimated Brazil with a 7 - 1 win in the semi finals knocking the host country out of contention. The aftermath of the defeat made it's way on to the streets where buses were set on fire by fans expressing their rage. After the game the German boss urged calm saying "There is no euphoria" insisting the team were already focused on the final.

On a lighter note the internet was awash with meme's at the expense of Brazil and as bad as things were for Brazil, feel a little sympathy for the German promotion that offered Formula 1 tickets at a discount based on the number of goals scored by Germany during the semi-finals.

The Ugly Side of the Beautiful Game

It wasn't all skill and technique when Brazil's Neymar suffered a major setback after being kneed in the back by Juan Zuniga during the match between Brazil and Columbia. Even though the tackle was widely condemned FIFA's disciplinary committee announced they would not sanction the Columbian for his actions. After the events Neymar revealed he feared he would be paralyzed later discovering the tackle resulted in a cracked vertebrae.

Speaking of unsportsmanlike like behaviour, Luis Suarez biting ban appeal was turned down.

Off the Field

The Donald Sterling/Clippers legal battle found it's way to court but as expected things didn't go smoothly. Initially Donald wanted the case moved to another court but was denied when the trial finally got underway Donald made a scene and was combative in court shouting at his wife "Get away from me, you pig!". Things didn't get better with Donald verbally attacking two doctors who declared him mentally incapacitated.

The case against Oscar Pistorius came to an end with Oscar's defense team closing the case with final arguments set for August. However just before the end of the trial a video was leaked on Australian TV showing Oscar re-enacting the events of the night he killed Reeva Steenkamp. Oscars legal team said they would take legal action over the leaked footage.
