2017 News Summary

2017 was the year of changes globally from natural disasters to terrorism and politics to sexual harassment all vying for center stage. If you missed any of our blog posts as the year rolled out be sure to check it out below.

In January it all kicked off with Donald Trump and the world waiting anxiously to see what would happen. By February there was news of new planets being discovered, Superbowl champions were crowned and fashion weeks saw beautiful models strut their stuff. By March there were terrorist attacks and Brexit moving forward along with Oscar errors and Bill Cosby news. April and May saw cyber crimes making the news along with climate change protestors taking to the streets. By the middle of the year Donald Trump faced more opposition and news on Russian interference with July taking a bashing from natural disasters, corruption and more. By August hurricanes had devastated parts of the US while the sports worlds fight of the century fizzled out. September saw repeats of natural disaster, Donald Trump and more fashion weeks. October had mass shootings rattling the US and markets saw action from Bitcoin and Brexit along with taxes and Harvey Weinstein and other men falling with the explosion of sexual harassment claims. In November we saw dictator Robert Mugabe removed from power and Catalonia standing up for itself while scandals rocked the Olympics and FIFA. By December there were wildfires in California and tax reform in place while ISIS struggled and cryptocurrencies soared.

October 2017 News


As the year draws to a close we see Donald Trump fighting his growing list of enemies while Catalonia fights for it's independence.  There was another mass shooting in the US and more natural disaster rocking US territories and Mexico. Taxes were back in the spotlight thanks to the GOP while Bitcoin skyrocketed to new highs and Brexit dragged along.

The world of science and technology saw Apple release new products and Nobel prizes awarded for advances in science. Lastly the entertainment world was rocked by revelations about Harvey Weinstein and his sexual assaults on various women.

Welcome to the second half of the year featuring terrorist attacks, sporting scandals and more to round off the big stories of July 2016.

Headline News


We begin again with brutality in the form of mass murder when a deranged terrorist drove a truck through a crowd of people in Nice, France killing innocent people along with a hostage situation at a church. But that wasn't all for July with police shootings in the US resulting in protests and attacks on the police themselves and an attempted coup in Turkey fell apart sending the military scrambling for the borders. The month then ended with a young man in Munich going on a shooting spree along with bombings in Baghdad and Germany. And if all the wasn't bad enough the US Election's held Armageddon themed conventions to scare people into voting for them.

Business News


The business world saw Yahoo being sold for a pitiful $5billion for the one time technology giant while Nintendo stocks went on a roller coaster ride with the success of Pokemon Go. Elsewhere Europe tried to tackle the issue of Brexit and VW continued to piece together it's shattered reputation all the while the taxman stood by with his hand stretched out.

Sports News


July was the month of sports with Wimbledon coming to an end with wins from Serena Williams and Andy Murray along with the Euro 2016 which saw Portugal take the title. While some came to an end other events continued with the Tour de France experiencing a bizarre set of accidents while the controversy around the Olympics in Rio continued and doping bans addressed by Russia.

Entertainment News


The entertainment world kicked things off with the BET Awards followed by Emmy nominations. Later celebrities were besieged by nerds at the annual Comic-Con which saw new movies launched and celebrities questioned by fans.

Technology News


Google was back under fire from Europe for various issues while Microsoft joined them on the hot seat for tracking users with Windows 10. Facebook didn't fare much better with law suits from the families of terrorist victims and controversial sales of guns via their platform.

Brexit - Britain leave the EU

Half way through the year and things just got weird, from a mass shooting in the US to Britain leaving the EU not to mention violence at Euro 2016 and drama over the Olympics. Buckle in as we look back at June 2016.

Headline News


The month saw a mass shooting in Orlando, Florida sending sent shock waves around the world as the deadliest terror attack in US history since 9/11. Following the tragedy law makers in the US finally took a stance agreeing to vote on gun control measures but after 4 bills failed to pass the Democrats resorted to a sit in. Elsewhere in the world West Virginia was hit with massive flooding killing more than 20 people while China saw a tornado kill over 50 people.

The month ended with another shocking twist when Britain stunned the world by voting to leave the EU in the infamous Brexit vote. Following the vote markets tumbled around the globe.

Business News


The Brexit sent markets scurrying in the last half of the month with the British pound hitting a 30 year low and gold prices shooting up. In other news VW said they would pay diesel owners up to $7,000.00 to settle the emissions scandal.

Sports News


The Euro 2016 was marred by violence with fights breaking out between Russian and English fans with France threatening to deport Russian fans. The Rio Olympics also ran into problems with money issues, controversial banning of Russian athletes and the killing of a mascot.

Entertainment News


The Tony Awards made history with the cast of Hamilton taking top honors while the entertainment world lost a young actor, Anton Yelchin, in an unfortunate freak accident when he was crushed by his vehicle.The month ended with the BET Awards which held a tribute to Prince.

Technology News


Apple held it's annual WWDC where it revealed the new iOS10 and move from OS X to macOS while at Facebook Mark Zuckerburg fought to keep control of the company he created.

Style News


In the world of fashion it was the men's turn to shine as Paris featured Men's Fashion Weeks from Dior to Kenzo and more.

Shooting Deaths on the Rise

This week we look at gun related crimes, from Oscar Pistorious to mass shootings in the US.

Oscar Pistorious


We begin with Oscar Pistorious who was found guilty of murder this week after a state appeal called into questions his original case. He will be sentenced in the original trial court.

Mass Shootings


The United States suffered multiple mass shootings in the space of a week with a crazed gunman shooting at a Planned Parenthood clinic to a couple shooting at an office party. The Planned Parenthood shooting was carried out by Robert Lewis Dear who was described by neighbours as "calm, but crazy" and was later reported to have said "no more baby parts" after he killed 3 and wounded 9.

The mass shooting in San Bernardino was carried out by Syed Rizwan Farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik who killed 14 and wounded more before being killed by police.

This week we saw beautiful people on the runways coming to an end and more revelations of a fading legacy along with carnage from another mass shootings.

Fashion Weeks


The Spring/Summer Fashion Week extravaganza came to an end in Paris after a whirl wind tour of New York, London and Milan before finishing in Paris.


Bill Cosby Scandal


Bill Cosby faced even more scandal this week with 3 more accusers coming forward accusing him of sexual assault and may face criminal charges.


Mass Shooting


Lastly we saw another mass shooting in the US when the gunmen identified as Chris Harper-Mercer opened fire on a community college in Oregon killing multiple people.

2 Mass Shootings this week alone

This week there have been not one but two mass shootings making headlines in the USA.

Washington Navy Yard


The first took place at a Washington Navy yard where 13 people including the gunmen were killed. The gunmen is reported to have acquired the gun through legal means.

Chicago Park


Later in the week 12 people, including a 3 year old, were shot in a Chicago park. The shooting has been described by witnesses as "gang-banging stuff".
